Writing is scary

It’s like public speaking, but worse – it’s permanent! If I stumble over my words when I’m talking, it’s a fairly safe bet people will forget in a little while. But if I write something down, people can come back and look at it later. It’s all there, in black and white. Forever.

At school I hated writing essays. This was a problem, because I loved the essay subjects. I love playing with language, analysing imagery, developing arguments. I did well enough though and managed to get to uni to study Classics and Philosophy (or ‘Arguing with Dead People’, as I like to call it). I had to be able to read fast and write well. Neither got easier with practice.

THEN I DISCOVERED I’M DYSLEXIC

Wow. That explains a lot!

Like why I gave that new Japanese student the wrong directions, “Go left”, I said, waving my right hand, “then right”, with my left. No wonder the poor guy looked so confused.

It also explained why, when I was 18, I had the spelling age of an 8-year old, why I had to fill forms out in pencil first, and why I couldn’t even write a Thank You note without first writing a plan!

Getting my diagnosis was fantastic. I got extra time in my exams, had one-to-one spelling lessons and learnt special techniques to help get my essays out of my head, onto the page. Turns out I’d taught myself a lot along the way without even realising it.

I’M A CEREAL* READER

Despite my ‘condition’, I’ll read anything and everything. Including the back of the cornflakes box! (*Get it?)

So while I built myself a nice little career path in design, putting copy other people gave me into pages I designed for them, I couldn’t stop reading it. And because I’d read it I felt compelled to ‘suggest’ ways they could improve it. Pretty soon, in every office I worked in, I became the person colleagues turned to to ‘fix’ their copy.

“Siân, where does the apostrophe go?”
“How do I spell ‘accommodation’?”
“This doesn’t sound right – can you fix it for me?”

“Y’all know I’m dyslexic, right? The only one in this office who is?”

It didn’t matter – they still asked, and I really enjoyed helping them. I became a one woman jargon-busting machine! Reuniting split infinitives, inventing mnemonics, I couldn’t get enough.

So when I decided I wanted to delve into the big wide world of self-employment, editing was the obvious choice.

Alternative Copy was born

Alternative Copy is not just another proof-reading service. Nor it is a copy writing service. It’s something else.

Through it, I give you, the confidence and skills you need to put your words down, your way and communicate effectively with your audience. Yes – you really can do both, even if you’re dyslexic.

I use the techniques I had to develop as a dyslexic person who needed to write. I share the tips that help me spell properly now (it’s not all about spell check and predictive text), and I help you overcome your fear of the blank page. I read what you’ve written and think about whether it actually makes sense. I ask you questions if your theories that don’t stack up, I push you to explain what you’re writing more clearly or more concisely. And I do it in a straight talking, no messing way that doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve just done 10 rounds with your English teacher. (FYI, my English teachers were all lovely. :-x )

Whether you need someone to polish up what you’ve already written or to help you pull the words out of your head and put them on to the page in the first place, I can help.

I will:

  • help you prove you’re a rock star in your field
  • take away the pain of not knowing how to get the words down on the paper
  • give you the confidence to shout about what you write (in a good way ;) .

I do this by:

  • working with you to plan your writing and get it out of your head and onto the page
  • editing your copy – so you say what you mean and mean what you say
  • working with you to ensure clarity and consistency of message – so you say the right thing every time, time after time.

That’s pretty much it.

I HELP YOU WRITE BETTER.
