My spelling is wobbly

Today is Pooh Day!

The day on which we fondly remember A.A.Milne and that genius creation of his, Winnie the Pooh.

One of my favourite quotes ever is the following:

My spelling is wobbly. It’s good spelling but it wobbles.

And the letters get in the wrong places.

As a child it appealed to me because I had wobbly spelling. I didn’t know I was dyslexic of course, so ‘wobbly’ spelling was the best explanation I could come up with.

Once I got my diagnosis I had special lessons and what not, and I made a much more conscious effort to teach myself the correct ways of spelling – rather than just waiting for it to ‘kick in’ – which it evidently wasn’t going to do. I did quite well, but still had to rephrase a lot of sentences so I could use the word I know, rather than the one I actually wanted to use, but didn’t have a hope of working out.

But one of the things that has really helped me is auto-correct in my text messages…

I know!

“Kids today don’t know how to spell – all they write is text speak!”

“Texting’s killing our language”

Blah blah blah…

You heard me – auto correct helps.

Because if my phone doesn’t know the word, and it’s a fairly common word, then the chances are I’ve got it wrong. Again.

If I have time to work out how to spell it I can, and in doing so I’m a step closer to learning it – because I’m having to actually think about it rather than just clicking ‘Accept’ on the auto-correct on the computer. If I don’t have time, then it’s back to re-writing the sentence.

Or in times of dire need, text speak. But I won’t go there now…

What about you? What impact have you found texting has had? Do you find it useful or insist on having auto-correct turned off? Let me know in the comments below…
